ITC achieves sustainable advances in ceramic inks

Castellón, 03/06/2024.

Castellón, 10/06/2024. The Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica Ceramic (ITC), as coordinator of the European project LIFE REPLAY has made “revolutionary advances” in the framework of this initiative supported by the LIFE 2014-2020 Environment and Climate Action Programme of the European Union, with reference LIFE20/ENV/ES/000115.
In LIFE REPLAY, 67% of the conventional ceramic pigment used in ceramic inkjet inks or digital printing inks has been replaced by a solid component recycled from waste.
This achievement not only demonstrates the technical feasibility of the project: it also marks an important milestone towards more sustainable production practices.

The main objective of the project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of using ceramic inkjet ink waste as a new raw material for the ceramic industry by separating them into a solid component based on an inorganic pigment and a liquid component based on an organic solvent. Both components will be used in the manufacture of ceramic pigments, inks and tiles.

The project is linked to various UN Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 9: Industry Innovation and Infrastructure; SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production; SDG 13: Climate Action; and SDG 17: Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.

LIFE REPLAY is integrated, under the coordination of ITC, as mentioned above, by the companies Akcoat Recubrimientos Químicos Especializados S.L.U (AKCOAT); Centro de Tratamiento de Residuos del Mediterráneo Sl (CTR); LEVANTINA-TECHLAM, S.L. and NEPTURY TECHNOLOGIES, S.L. (NEPTURY).
